Built in the 6th century to meet the water needs of Constanitinople, there is a 27 million gallon underground cistern beneath the old city. It really is quite a site. Evidently it was built using a special mortar that kept the water in and is still working. At one time it was forgotten, then rediscovered, shored up and now a great tourist attraction. There is a great spiritual metaphor here...a huge vastness of water/life that is just waiting below the surface to be remembered and reclaimed. For many a Christian our baptism is just such a water source of life! Here are some pictures.
